EFFECT OF HYPNOSIS AND MENTAL IMAGERY ON HEALING OF A CASE OF ULCERATIVE COLITIS

Farzad Goli, MD

This article reports hypnotic management of a 35 years old woman affected by ulcerative collities. Disease flared-up about 9 years befor and endoscopic studies had showed erosions wich covered all of colon approximately. Because of recurent and sever hematochezia, 3 monthes befor beging of hypnotherapy she was operated and whole of colon was amputated (total colectomy).

Even after operation she had rectorrhagia 3-5 times per day, she was anemic (Hb:9-10) and candidate for colostomy and of course affected by major depression, automatic thought, anxiety and migratory somatic pain. These mental problems existed prior to her colitis and only were aggravated after that.

After 3 session of hypnosis with ego straining, her mood was elated and anxiety was reduced and so frequency and volume of hemorrhages was decreased.

After next 3 session with imagery of mucousal healing and increasing of barrier score of body image hemorrhages was decreased to 2-3 times in month and lesser content of blood, migratory pain was ceased and mental symptoms were ameliorated. she  trained Autohypnosis with imagery and was exercising daily. After 3 monthes  follow up no instance of relapse was reported.
This is a fact of efficacy of metaphoric and mental interventions on a case of ulcerative colitis and it suggests more studies on effectiveness of this safe and non-invasive sort of therapy.
